CISA Warns Managed Service Providers of Cyber Threats

CISA has issued a statement regarding a spike in cyber threats against managed service providers.

  • On May 11, the US’ Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) came forward with cybersecurity authorities from the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand to warn managed service providers (MSPs) about an upward trend in cyber threats targeting their industry.
  • The joint Cybersecurity Advisory (CSA) shared that because MSPs provide such critical service to IT infrastructure and business processes, they are considered a key target for malicious hackers.
  • Threat actors are likely to exploit the trust that is fostered between MSPs and their client base, and the joint statement predicts that hackers will use the MSP as a gateway to both their internal assets and those of their customers.

When an MSP is breached, it’s not just their assets on display – all of their customers become vulnerable as well.

As you fortify your cybersecurity coverage, it’s important to remember that you are not the sole holder of your data – any vendors, clients, and partners that have access to your data could be targeted in a breach, too. A comprehensive cybersecurity program covers ALL of your gaps, not just the obvious ones. Make sure to communicate with your business partners and keep track of everywhere your data might be compromised.
